In this month's newsletter, let's look at a few more of the factors one should consider as guidelines for purchasing pharmaceutical grade fish oil... purity and freshness.

If fish oil has not been subjected to a multiple molecular distillation process, it probably
has the presence of dangerous pollutants and carcinogens such as PCBs, mercury,
dioxins and furans.

Unless you happen to have sophisticated equipment for testing the contaminants in your
fish oil (costing approximately over CAD$450,000), you will not have the opportunity to
check the quality of the fish oil you have purchased.

Fortunately, many fish oil suppliers who use molecular distillation methods perform a
more sophisticated analysis. The most sophisticated way in the World to test fish oil for contaminants is provided by an independent institute called International Fish Oil Standards ("IFOS"). Based on the results of the IFOS analysis, each fish oil batch is scored, with a maximum of 5 stars being awarded.

Many fish oil suppliers avoid submitting their fish oil product values, knowing that the results are accessible to anyone via the internet. Other suppliers only send 1 batch of fish oil product from their company, so that consumers are led to believe that all their other batches of fish oil conform to the sample being tested. This would be like thinking that all vintages of a wine always have the same flavour!

If the fish oil you purchased does not appear on the IFOS site with the same Batch Number and Expiry Date on the label or bottle, then there is no guarantee of its quality, and you should avoid its use. Remember you only have 1 health!

Note: Remember that only a very PURE pharmaceutical grade fish oil can be taken for long periods of time and at high doses.

To obtain a 5 star Certificate of Analysis from IFOS, the raw materials must be handled with
the utmost care, ensuring that the freshness is maintained throughout the entire
manufacturing process. A fresh fish oil is very light and easily digestible, and should only have
a slight aroma of fish.

The freshness of fish oil is measured by TOTAL oxidation and is composed of two
components: peroxide and anisidine. Some fish oil suppliers world-wide do not publish the anisidine values, and even though the values of peroxides may be normal, in fact, the total oxidation can be very high. Beware of trickery!

The first stage of oxidation in any fish oil is the formation of peroxides, which then break down into aldehydes and ketones, substances that can damage DNA!

A PURE pharmaceutical grade fish oil must have its TOTAL oxidation values under strict limits. Always ensure that the TOTAL oxidation values on a Certificate of Analysis are less than 13 meq/kg. set by IFOS. This TOTAL oxidation level is about 3 times lower than those of European Pharmacopoeia and Norwegian Medicinal Standard, which do not indicate a value for anisidine or total oxidation!.

Experts Say Fish Oil is Necessary for Human Health

The Research studies have revealed the fish oil benefits are great and amazing. And knowing this is the second most essential thing you can do for your health.

The Fish oil health advantages come mainly from the two Omega 3 essential fatty acids in fish oil DHA docosahexaenoic acid and to a smaller extent the EPA which stands for eicosapentaenoic acid. If we look at it more exclusively, omega-3 has been found to play a major role in the protection of the cells in the retina from degenerative conditions like age-induced macular degeneration, pigments and retinitis. Macular generation, as you probably know, is the leading cause of loss of vision for the old aged population. The Scientific proofs and evidences seem to establish the fact that omega-3 fish oils can protect and reduce damage to the eyes caused by inflammation, light, irritation, ischemia and the effect of free radicals in the eyes.

It also helps in reducing the Pain and the swelling. The Omega 3 fatty acids, mainly EPA, have done a very positive effect on the inflammatory response. By the help of a number of mechanisms, they regulate your body’s inflammation cycle, which prevents and relieves painful conditions like arthritis, prostatitis, cystitis and anything else ending in “itis.”
The Omega 3 fatty acid which is found in the fish oil have also been confirmed to work wonderfully well for your heart and the whole system and network of arteries and veins that make up your cardiovascular system. They help to lessen the cholesterol, triglycerides, LDLs and blood pressure, while at the same time increasing good HDL cholesterol. Omega fatty acids add years to your life expectancy.

It lowers risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease; studies have found that fish oil seems to help protect the nervous system. It decreases mild high blood pressure – fish oil helps lower blood pressure when it is due to high cholesterol and hardening of the arteries. It also helps to reduce the possibility of blood clots, fish oil benefits comprises of the prevention of blood platelets from sticking collectively and forming blood clots.
